It was an ordinary day when I decided I would find the perfect suit. Not for a celebration. Not for anyone else. Just for me.
I had been living in Australia for years, far away from the warmth of home. And every time I searched for a piece of my heritage – a traditional suit, something that spoke to me – I came up empty-handed.
I walked through store after store, holding each piece up to my body, but none of them felt like me. The fabrics were stiff, the designs were foreign, and the colours felt dull. Nothing reminded me of my childhood, of my mother’s careful hands stitching intricate designs, or the way my grandmother’s laughter would fill the air when she would share stories of our ancestors.
And in that moment, I felt a wave of loneliness. It wasn’t just about clothing. It was about connection. About missing the threads of my culture, my roots, my family that had been woven into every fabric, every embroidery, every moment back home.
I realized then that it wasn’t just me. There must be so many women – like me – living in foreign lands, carrying the weight of their heritage in their hearts, but struggling to find something that truly reflected who they were. How many women, I wondered, walked into shops and felt that same frustration? That ache of not being able to find a simple piece that felt like home?
